BleepingComputer.com: Malware Problem - Vista SP2

I'm having a malware problem on my laptop (Vista SP2) that I've been fighting for about a week now. It started with problems with Svchost.exe (netsvcs), as as a result, the following services started mis-behaving: my profile, Windows Problem Reporting, Windows Update. I also started having problems with IE8 (blank pages that froze, extra IE windows opening up whenever I clicked a link).

Things I have tried:
1. Virus scan of my usual virus program (Trend Micro Internet Security)
2. Registry cleaner, which removed a bunch of registry entries that it labelled as "bad".
3. Virus scan by SpyBot, which detected an illegitimate registry entry allowing security loopholes to Internet Explorer, and removed it. This caused the problems with services to go away, but the IE problems remained.
4. Virus scan by MalwareBytes
5. Created a new profile, to see if I had problems there. I did.
6. Ran IE with no add-ons - same problem.
7. Ran in Safe Mode with networking - same problem.
8. Reset Windows Explorer
9. Ran Hijack this. It detected an unknown file called "neonsp.2047.dll"

Last night, in a renewed round of fighting, I renamed the neonsp.2047.dll file. That, and a reset of IE again, caused the problems to go away entirely, and I thought I'd finally fixed it. However, this morning my Trend Micro detected a malicious Javascript file and told me to delete it, which I promptly did (being very careful not to run it). Unfortunately, just after that, the original symptoms started coming back. Currently my IE is being hijacked constantly to ad sites, and my services are still not working properly.

To anyone else with similar symptoms: I figured out that problem was a RootKit virus. The solution that I found was to download TDSSKiller from the Kaspersky Labs website and run it. After that, everything went back to normal.
