How to install USB wireless connection?

I have an older computer running Windows XP. I need to use an USB wireless connection (which I was successful in installing before). Unfortunately my USB device broke, so I had to buy a new one. According to my written installation guide these are the steps: Control Panel-Network connection-wireless connection-properties. The next step is supposed to be click on the wireless networks tab. But I don't see that tab. How do I go on to add a new connection and enter connection properties such as SSID, network key, etc.? TIA. BTW my home network is hidden so it's not on the wireless networks list.
