I find nothing wrong with WinME Defrag. I use Win98 and I always replace Defrag with WinME Defrag. It works twice as fast as 98's. -------------------- Keith

Dexpot - a Short Review
At the start of this thread, I noticed a program called Dexpot, which is a multiple desktop manager. I gave it a try, not really expecting any more than I've found with other such programs that I've tried and discarded. I found much more. Each desktop is fully configurable. Screen resolution, Background, Screensaver; all can be configured differently for each desktop. When turned on, the Desktop Manager displays an inoffensive little set of icons (each configurable) for each desktop, that can be placed anywhere on the screen. Right next to the Min/Max/Close buttons is a good place for it. I'm one of those that hates the Windows Start button system. When I want to use a program, I want to be able to double-click on a shortcut and go. Consequently, my desktop was full of shortcuts, to the point that it had become nearly impossible to keep them grouped by category. Other multiple desktop managers I'd tried simply didn't let me move sets of icons from one desktop to the next. They'd either all be carbon copies of the original desktop, or, if you could find a way to move shortcuts to separate desktops, they'd all end up back on my main desktop, jumbled hopelessly, if I exited the program. With Dexpot, however, if I want to move a shortcut from one destop to another, I simply drag it to the proper icon on the manager and, Voila!, it's now where it belongs. The best part, though, is that if I should close Dexpot, they all stay where they belong! Games stay on the Games desktop, Utilities stay where they belong - finally I have all of my programs separated into the proper groups, on different desktops, and they all stay put!! If you have been looking for a good multiple desktop manager, look no further. A small program (uses 5K when running), a short download, and best of all - free. I wasn't disappointed, and if you should give it a try, I don't think you will be, either. |

JKDefragGUI - A nice "front-end to the great JKDefrag
Scribus - nice opensource Desktop publisher. As alternative to the MS Publisher programme Considering that I have to reinstall all my stuff, I might find some more useful thingies - edit - I forgot to mention that there are several GUIs for JKDefrag; the above is just the one of choice for me. Here s a google for it: http://preview.tinyurl.com/ynw6wj This post has been edited by Yourhighness: Oct 11 2007, 04:06 AM -------------------- - "How did I get infected?" - "Safe-hex" - Member of UNITE - - The HJT forum is very busy. Please note that the site linked to for "klite codec pack" now asks for a sign up. If you wish to just download it and get many other useful codecs, go here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm I had the same experience a couple of days ago. Click on download, and they want your email address &c, and (it seems) a paid-in-advance subscription to a movie download service. Today I visited their site again, using a link from a different website, mostly to save the URL, and clicked on download again. This opened the page Download K-Lite Codec Pack, which leads to a list of mirrors. I downloaded v.3.5 with no fuss from Major Geeks. This is peculiar. Was their site highjacked? Or was Bleeping Computer Forum hacked? The reason I ask is that the site referenced in Grinler’s post is red-rated by McAfee Site Advisor. Not a Good Thing. Apparently some scum bag registered the domain name «k-litecodecpack DOT com» and is using it to sell his product or to phish. Caveat emptor. Please, please, Grinler, edit your post ASAP. K-Lite’s home page seems to be on the website called Codec Guides, page = About the K-Lite Codec Pack ——Solo Owl This post has been edited by Solo Owl: Oct 17 2007, 10:00 PM |

A much better freeware alternative to Putty is rampart-ssh
http://rampart-ssh.com - this is a very simple, fast, and reliable terminal emulator. If you work with Cisco MPLS VPNs this is a must have. |

Thanks for this wonderful thread!
I've been using ATnotes -- a freeware sticky note application -- since its inception many years ago under the name Tornado. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued for the last two years, but the webmaster continues to maintain the site, and the latest version is still downloadable. I LOVE this program! It allows you to create a folder hierarchy, make notes invisible or partially invisible, it sets alarms, and much more. Perhaps other sticky programs do the same thing, but I've never even felt like checking them out. I do a lot of graphics work and often need a stand-alone color picker. I've tested many of them, but so far my favorite is EclipsePalette, one of several nice free utilities from GreenEclipse.com. -------------------- |

Does anyone know of a good freeware CMOS utility?
I would want one that does 3 things: * Save the contents of the BIOS CMOS to a bootable diskette (or USB drive). * Restore the contents of this diskette to the BIOS CMOS. * Save the contents of the BIOS CMOS to a human-readable .TXT file on the hard disk. Ideally it should work on any motherboard whatsoever, or at least on those with a particular manufacturer’s chipsets. ——Solo Owl |
