I read that blog every day, along with many others. I just find it disturbing that such a company goes with opt-out option and an additional toolbar. I no longer link to it, but thats my personal opinion. There are many other freeware alternatives out there that are just as good, if not even better than ZA.

Please note that Zonealarm now comes with the Ask toolbar. I do not support Zonealarm in my suggestions for freeware firewalls anymore and if someone has installed it, I point to this blog post: http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/another-security-company-succumbs-to.html

I would like to ask to either remove ZA, or make a note on the first page of this thread, pointing to the blog post. Merci YoHi

I'm finding more companies doing this. I noticed when you're installing a program and it gives you choices of the type of install: quick, normal, express, or recommended, is when they slip it in. If you go with the full or custom install, they'll have the opt-out option there

I have been seeing that when I update ZA for a while now. So I uncheck the box and continue. So what's the big deal?

I've found it to be a big help, when installing and updating software, to actually look at what's on the screen before stabbing the "next" button.

Matt,

not everyone is as thorough as you. If I was to read the EULA and other stuff every time, I would go mad. I just click next next done. I do however have the knowledge to watch out for such opt out boxes. A toolbar offered along the road, is nothing to worry about. However, it should be opt-in. Obviously there are different pov on this, but I do feel that the staff at BC should point this "byproduct" out, for those that are not very knowledgable in this area or are less worried about installs.

DaChew, can your program be used to rip the audio tracks from a DVD and burn them onto a CD? (So I can listen in the car).

Thanks, Joel

Commercial dvd's are encrypted with CSS, fair use is a causualty of DRM, Imgburn will never do anything illegal.

If you google the author it will be evident why.

I couldn't find this one listed:

System Tray Media Player- The smallest media player that I've ever seen that plays in the system tray. It doesn't even require installation, and is less than 250 kb. More information here.
Very useful if you don't want an extra window in the task bar thumbup.gif

Ehh, I'm surprised Mplayer isn't on here.
Mplayer is a great alternative to VLC. Information here. There's also an (unofficial, I think) version of it, it's available on portableapps and softpedia.

May I suggest FinalBurner, it is a freeware CD/DVD Authoring tool which is very useful and does pretty much the same things that many pay - CD/DVD authoring software does. I highly recommend it and think it should go on this list.

Here is the CNet Review:

QUOTE
FinalBurner is a freeware alternative to expensive CD and DVD burners. Its users will benefit from the opportunity to create data, audio, and video disks and burn them onto any type of media, such as CD R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD DL. No tedious or confusing configuration needed. You just select a few main settings and start burning. FinalBurner's artificial intelligence will find the perfect recording balance.

The link for it can be found here http://www.protectedsoft.com/

Regards,
David.

Have read all ten pages but Bookmarks/Favorites do not seem to be covered. I have a desktop and a laptop and use Internet Exlorer 7 and Firefox so keeping my bookmarks/favorites up to date on each machine and between browsers is nightmare.

Does anyone know of a freeware bookmarks/favorites program similar to Bookmark Buddy that I could keep on a flash drive or at least on each machine which I could then synchronise regularly?

Hi,

I know of an add-on for Firefox. It's called Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer. It allows you to do two things:
  1. To keep your bookmarks synchronized in two (or more) different computers.
  2. To reach your bookmarks from any computer with an Internet connection.
Once you install it, it will run always on the backward keeping a log of your current bookmarks and the new ones you keep adding to your list. Whenever you close Firefox (or whenever you want), the program connects with a remote server to make a copy of your bookmarks. That copy is only available to you (you will have to create an account and set a password). If you install this add-on on two different computers, you can make your second computer to connect to this remote backup of your bookmarks in order to synchronize both systems (this can be performed automatically by the program). If you want, you can give another person a view-only level of access to your bookmarks by creating a URL address, or even create a RSS feed for them to be always updated whenever you bookmark a new website.

You'll find the add-on here.

However, you must note the following:
  1. It only works with Mozilla Firefox.
  2. After installing the add on, you'll have to create an account in MyFoxmarks (http://my.foxmarks.com). It's free.
  3. Regretfully, you cannot export your bookmarks into a file in order to carry them in your flash memory, as you said you wanted to.
Hope it helps,
