Basically this is a precautionary suggestion. Ideally you have been backing up all of your important files to a removable storage device, like CDs, DVDs, another hdd, a flash drive, etc.

Microsoft has instructions for what to do prior to installing SP3, I would suggest reading this first.

You should backup...whatever it considered by you on your system...to be important and which cannot be reinstalled or recovered, in the event of a system problem or other calamity.

DC3 - Your Microsoft link goes to a Malwarebytes download link :oopsign:

Its not a bad idea to temporarily disable your anti virus software when installing SP3
The installation could take a while depending on your system 30 - 45 minutes so please be patient and let it complete
In the beginning there was the command line.

Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (sp3) Information - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic146857.html

Some OEMs (e.g., Dell, HP, etc.) have specific procedures/instruction posted at their websites...re installing SP3. If you have one of those systems, you probably ought to check it out.

Before doing any service pack updates please do the following:

1) Make sure all hardware Drivers are updated including the BIOS.

2) Make sure all applications are updated and patched to the very latest versions.

3) Make sure you disconnect any USB Devices.

4) Make sure that any security applications are disabled prior to the install.
