My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

The only way to scan text accurately...is to use the OCR-writing program that came with the scanner.
You cannot save a text file as a graphics file or vice versa...well, you can but it's self-defeating because what you wind up with is a picture of a document, rather than a document you can edit, print, etc.
Typically...the default scan option is to scan a graphics file...check the software which came with your scanner. Default resolution should be around 300 dpi, IIRC.

characters. However, in viewing them, they appea perfect. Allow me to
address the concern.
It appears that what you are scanning might be converted to OCR. This is
why you are getting garbled characters when scanning. Let me check and
verify this.
Please try to scan using Paint. To scan using MS Paint:
a. Click on Start --» All Programs or Programs --» Accessories --» MS Paint
or Paint.
b. Once you open up Paint. On the upper left part of it, click on File.
c. Select Import from Camera or Scanner (XP)/Scan from scanner or camera
(Vista/Windows 7).
d. Select Lexmark XXXX series then press on scan.
If the output image is good, then you need to change the settings of your
All in One Center. Please make sure the dropdown box of the Scan to on the
top panel is set Lexmark photo Editor so the pictures will appear as
pictures. Thank You, MIKE!

Sounds to me like it is the wrong one, like an association is messed up
For example, if you try to open a picture with Word instead of a photo viewer you will get exactly what you are describing.
