I have Microsoft Works 8.0 on my XP Home computer but can't for the life of me figure out out to stop it from running on startup. There seems to be no option for doing do and it does not reside in Windows Startup folder.

Have you read the tutorial on how to use the startup database? PLease read it and follow the instructions on downloading and running Autoruns.
Then look at this link:

Do you have any of these entries listed in autoruns? If so you can uncheck them.
