BleepingComputer.com: Help with saving files for new Win 7 install using two HDDs

I have two 500gb HDDs in my current setup. One as the primary and the other as an extra. Im running XP but plan to do a new install of Win 7. What I want to do is save my personal files for the new install. Can someone tell me if this method will work:

1. Transfer all personal files from primary HDD (C:) onto the extra HDD (E:)
2. Disconnect extra HDD (E:)
3. Put new install of Win 7 on primary HDD (C:), partition and format.
4. Reconnect extra HDD (E:)
5. Copy/Paste my personal files back onto the primary HDD (C:)
6. Reformat extra HDD (E:) to comply with Win 7, if even needed.

Would I run into errors given that I am now running Win 7 instead of XP and the extra HDD (E:) is formatted to my old XP setup?

That method will work just fine with all standard files, provided were talking about photos, documents, etc. Any programs, like microsoft office, or games like COD or anything like that will have to be reinstalled as they have registry edits that allow them to run. But as for all your files, documents, that method should work just fine, you shouldnt even have to disconnect the extra HDD as long as your careful not to choose that one by mistake when you install windows 7 on your primary (disconecting it will eliminate mistakes) and you shouldnt have to reformat the extra once 7 is installed-since it will be installed on your primary HDD. Windows 7 doesn't care if you swap extra drives in and out, the only thing it throws a fit over is if you swap out the motherboard without reinstalling it. You can choose to reformat the extra, but you don't need to, in fact it might be wiser just to keep your data on the second drive-that way, if you ever have to reinstall your OS or upgrade again, you dont have to take the time to transfer everything, its already all on the second drive.
