screen "snowing", then blinks and shuts down

Hi all,
I have this problem, that sometimes I start to see little flashing dots on my screen, then it starts to blink, then shuts down. Trying to turn it on and off-doesn't help, what helps is manual system reboot, then it becomes normal again.
I don't know what causes it. Had no virus. Everything worked just fine. Now, this problem I have is very rear-I get it aprox. once in a week, strangely-only during night hours. I have checked my hard drive with Hard disk sentinel and video card with 3D mark. Everything appears to be normal. The issue is not application dependent. I can run a game with some heavy graphics 1000 times and it would be fine, and yet it can give me that problem, while just surfing at news web-site. The screen is a regular monitor for a regular desktop computer. The drivers I use for my videocard are not the latest, but those, proved to be most stable. I use them for half a year now and everything was just fine. What can it be?

Have you tried to plug the monitor cable in firmly?

Yes, however I have only tried 1 slot and I have 2 at my video card

To my regret-no. if I'd had another computer, I'd immediately switched monitors-to see if the problem is in monitor
