Regarding $xx$ files. I have found as long as you leave the very first $folder$ in place deleting the others causes no problem. On my current system it is named $hf_mig$. Guessing it is the same on all XP installs.
You can then go one step further. Go into Add\remove. Check mark the box Show updates. Each entry corresponding to an $update folder$ you deleted will then throw an uninstall error when you hit remove. Ok the error to remove the entry from Add\remove.
WARNING: This does not apply to IE updates as well as a couple others. If you do not get the above mentioned error then DO NOT uninstall.
You should also wait a day to a week after new updates are pushed out and installed on you system. This will give you time to make sure they have not caused any conflicts on your system which.

"I need to know with the regisry back up called ERUNT how does this work "
your erunt restore points are in your WINDOWS folder, actually in a folder called ERDNT. that is not a typo. it's got the letter d as in dog.
choose the latest restore point that you made just before the mishap, and click on it. it's saved my skin before. great program.
