If my memory serves me correct the starting IP was 70 something; but I have a lot of issues on my mind.

If the IP starts with 70 then it is not private, and is publicly route able.

Read the link I gave you as it will explain what a private IP is and what IP Addresses consist of private IP addressing.

Thanks, I will. So, if the IP address is public, then what are your recommendations about posting them?

As far as the issue goes it matters not what the IP actually is although it does make solving the problem a little easier. The real issue was that the asker was not recieving one on that computer from the DHCP server. Statically assigning an address on a computer that is recieving an IP dynamically from an ISP can be problematic since that IP could have been assigned to another computer already by the ISP.

Checking the firewall reveals that it's actually turned off because Norton Antivirus is running a firewall. I tried turning them both off; no connection.

Do you have the most current version of Norton AV and have you paid for it or are you running the trial version--out of curiosity?

Please read the very top of Foxed's post.

I doubt the release time could be set that low to already dish out an IP address assigned to a computer moments before but I could be wrong...? I've never worked for an ISP though.

Foxed--Baltboy could have a valid point, could you let us know the time it took you to do that?

@ Foxed with apologies to HighDesertBum.

I stand corrected regarding the situation concerning IP`s and the need to mask them in this case. I had not seen the 70. prefix. That is not in any reserved blocks and is a traceable IP. It should not have been revealed under any circumstances. Public or private.

My bad.

Id also like to apologize, and offer up this bit of advice. Have you checked the network cable going from the PC to the modem/router?

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Unfortunately Foxed has. The room mate was kind enough to lend their laptop for testing purposes and has successfully received an IP address via DHCP from the modem--this too also being a Vista machine.

Sorry for disappearing on everyone--huge appointment this morning that I was preparing for.

Now--back to shenanigans. The information (or at least some of it), as requested:
cryptodan: I believe the cable is a good one? I say this only because I am able to connect to the internet using the laptop. So I believe that it's a good cable? I hope?

HighDesertBum & Baltboy: Just to be clear; are you asking the time it took for the laptop to get an IP? Or for me to set the IP of the desktop? Because it wasn't very long at all (>1min?) to assign the laptop an IP. I then took down all that information and transferred it to the desktop, powered down the modem, restarted the modem and connected everything...so about ~8min? Maybe? Perhaps?

And just to clarify: I believe it was a 66.xxx.xxx.189 IP. (I have the exact number, in case it turns out that it is safe to post, should I need it...but it doesn't look like it falls in the 10. range? Or am I misreading things? I am sleep deprived.)

HighDesertBum: I believe it is the latest version; it's a paid for subscription that was renewed like 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, I'm not at the desktop in question so I can't get the exact version number for you (or the exact IP, which is sitting next to the computer). If you need it, I can get it asap.

Thank you all so much for you help on this--and sorry if I miss something/repost something that isn't needed. My specialty is on the stuff that happens AFTER the internet works--I'm definitely a fish out of water right now.

No worries, Foxed! If you feel like it and if anyone needs it, you could post the last two octets. I can guarantee your subnet mask hasn't changed and if it was 255.255.248.0, the last two will only be necessary to make sure your IP address is in the correct network--as long as the first two octets remain the same for both.

Yes, when you have a chance could you provide me with your Norton/Symantec version? Also, it might be a good idea to record the product key if you haven't already... We might try uninstalling it. But, if the consensus feels it appropriate, I would run a Malwarebytes scan so we can be sure nothing screwy is going on behind the scenes. You can find it at:

http://data.mbamupdates.com/tools/mbam-rules.exe

You seem like a savvy user and probably have a flash drive? What I suggest is downloading it and the definitions to your flash drive/CD-R/(W) and install them on your machine.

P.S. Foxed--cryptodan posted a great link explaining private IP address if/when you have the time to read it. Anything from 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0-172-31.255.255 and 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255 are deemed private which are safe to post anywhere.
