I had a malware and I removed it.. my explorer.exe file was gone so I replaced it using "sfc /scannow" But now when I click on shortcuts the wrong thing happens.. IE: My Computer opens computer management, the only way to view the file system is manual like the old dos days but programs open containing folders just fine, If I click on a folder VLC player opens and plays the first file in the folder. Is there a way to get windows to remember how to access the file system.. regedit ect...

What malware...and how can you be certain that you removed all traces from your system?
FWIW: IMO, users seldom have one malware item on their system. A look at the scan results from any malware tool will probably back up my assertion.

If you ran sfc /scannow properly...there's probably little that would be changed by a repair install of XP.
You might try the Doug Knox suggestion, http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/, scroll down to XP Easy File.
You also might try running the chkdsk /r command.
