My main cpu is broke and Elise is kindly helping me with that. I am on and working from my laptop which is super slow with everything I do and always saying its low on virtual memory. Sometimes just to open a folder it will take 2-5 minutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Chugg

With only 512 megs of ram and part of that being used by onboard video I would try to optimize the computer

Ok I will follow those instructions. Can I upgrade my ram? Will that help? How do I know what to buy and how to do it myself.

I would get another 512Meg Stick of RAM your video card uses 64megabytes dedicated RAM for itself. It does not share RAM with the system ram.

Quote

Graphics/Video
Toshiba Personal Theatre 15.0 UXGA active-matrix display;
internal display supports up to 16M colors at 1600 x 1200
NVIDIA GeForce4 460 Go graphics controller; 64MB 250MHz
DDR external video memory
Direct 3D support, Open GL support, Direct Video, Direct MPEG,
Motion Competition
External Color Support/Refresh Rate:
800 x 600; 100Hz Non-Interlaced @16M
1024 x 768; 100Hz Non-Interlaced @16M
1280 x 1024; 100Hz Non-Interlaced @16M
1600 x 1200; 85Hz Non-Interlaced @16M
1920 x 1440; 60Hz Non-Interlaced @16M

Your lap top can only support up to 1024Megabytes of RAM.

Below is a list of compatible memory for your lap top

Kingston Memory
KTT3614/128 128MB PC2100 SDRAM Memory
KTT3614/256 256MB PC2100 SDRAM Memory
KTT3614/512 512MB PC2100 SDRAM Memory

TOSHIBA SD Memory
SD-M3203B3 32MB
SD-M6403B3 64MB
SD-M1283B3 128MB

Thank you for this info. I am not very good with RAM terms. What would I google to buy. I saw you listed what was compatable so I googled it and nothing came up. What would the search terms be? I will get 512mb as you suggested.

Also, is there any instructions anywhere of how to open my laptop and put this in? I have done it with my desktop before but had instructions.

Also, thank you for your help Dachew!

Speccy shows both slots populated with 256 meg sticks

I would just optimize the computer rather than spend any money on it at this point

Hey dachew. I just wanted to let you know that I only cleared the first step of the instructions so far and my laptop is already substantially faster. You were right. I can only imagine how much better it will be by the end.

Well I know I said my laptop got better but it didnt. I guess I didnt try it out long enough. Its so bad that a simple task like right clicking on a folder to delete it it will sometimes take 2-3 minutes just to recognize that I clicked it. I followed and did everything in the link given to my my cpu faster. Also, in my startup programs I have something called cftmon.exe which after research seems to be a trojan.

Reduce the number of programmes that are Auto Starting

You will have to gut these to the bare minimum with 512 megs of ram

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic87058.html

see note on ctfmon
