Hi all,

My brothers laptop recently was turned off incorrectly by him, and the next time he booted it up he recieved an error stating that windows needed to repair itself. After clicking this repair option the laptop went into the recovery console but was unable to repair, stating the administrator must be contacted. Once in safe mode it doesn't even allow to boot into windows before the repair screen comes up, the OS is by all means screwed. Here's the bad thing though, we did not create a recovery CD nor did the laptop come with one! Does this mean we need to purchase another copy of Vista?

Thanks guys

If you have Vista DVD...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-re...tall-vista.html

If you don't have Vista DVD...

1. Create Vista Recovery Disc.

Option 1:
http://www.c4consulting.com.au/soluctions/...0SOLUCTIONS.htm

Option 2:
Download Vista Recovery Disc iso image: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/
Burn it to CD, or DVD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning...+to+a+CD+or+DVD

2. Boot from created disk.
At first screen click on Repair your computer:

This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box:

After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt:

Try System Restore, first.
If that doesn't work, try Startup Repair.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! Downloaded and burned the disk, tried to use system restore but no recovery points were created so was unable to, and used start up repair but no problems were detected. Thanks for your time.

"Windows cannot repair this computer automatically

If you have recently attached hardware or devices to this computer, such as a camera or music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message contact your system administrator or computer manufactuerer. Click finish to exist tand shutdown your computer.

View diagnostic and repair details. View advanced options for system recovery and support."

This is all I'm getting I'm afraid. I have not attached any hardware or devices to the system either, really stuck with this. If you need any more info just ask. Thanks for your time.

Mike

It is a Toshiba and is only a few years old. No important data on there that isn't backed up thankfully. Going to have to buy Vista I guess?

Let's see, if it has recovery partition....

Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

No luck there I'm afraid. I did as you said and it just led me to the normal boot process which of course gets halted by the "Windows could not automitically repair" screen.

You'll have to contact Toshiba and request recovery DVD. It'll be cheaper, than getting Vista DVD.
Vista DVD would be always handy, but it all depends on your budget.
