I'd run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic...after moving all desired data files to another home.

When I see "hardware" as a suspect...I think hard drive first...until proven innocent

Will do. I'll run HW diagnostic from F12 screen on Dell. But unable to access any data to remove.

Ran Dell Diagnostic from F12 menu which reported:
Error Code 0142
Error Code 2000-0142
Unit 0; Drive self test failed byte 79
So it appears I may have a HW problem. I still need assistance in retieving data from drive. Any suggestions?

Remove the hard drive...attach it to another system...move the files.
You can attach directly or via USB...depends on the good system and type of hard drive in the troubled system.
That's all assuming that the drive can be recognized/read by the other system...
But Dell says this about the error, http://support.dell.com/support/topics/glo...E0A55177ED2#HDD

After reinstalling the hard drive, re-run the diagnostics. If you receive the same error code, Contact Us.
