I'm operating on ME, but when I start up the PC I get a message "explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL". Windows doesn't load and whilst I get the taskbar up, if I cancel the error message it disappears and I'm left with a blank screen. I've tried system restore and the various troubleshooters without success. Any ideas??

Have you seen this resolution posted in another forum?
You should boot in Safe Mode and do a scandisk with 'Thorough' and 'Fix' checked before you restore any files.
I assume you've already done a system file check?

If you can't boot to safe mode, go to http://www.bootdisk.com, and boot from a floppy to C:\ and run scandisk.
