I would make a copy of the file first.

What version of Word

What is the extension of the file name?
you can try renaming it with a .docx if it is not already a .doc or .docx

Word has a feature that may work.

Open Word
pull down file and choose open
navigate to the document and highlight it
do not open it

Instead look at the open button it will have a little pull down menu.
pull that menu down and choose open and repair.

EDIT
once open copy all Ctrl A then open a new doc and paste Ctrl V

Ignore the squares and symbols and search for the first word of your text. If the file is not so corrupted that the text itself no longer exists, you could copy the text and past it back into a new Word document. Then you could restore your formatting to how you want it.
Pleased to have been a Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) 2007/8, 2008/9

I pressed F5, and I'm feeling refreshed...

What version of Word are you using?

Did you by chance create this doc on another computer then bring it to another computer to open.

Yes I stripped the text out and sent it back.

Probably the originating computer had Word 2010 not backward compatible to Word 2003.
Take the file back to the original computer or a Word 2010 machine, open it then choose save as and save as type Word 2003.
Use a new file name for safety
Then you should be able to open it at home.

Re E-mailed again.

The doc has Word 2007 attributes.
At some point it was opened and saved on 2007

I have the same size, upon extraction the file quadruple in size probably due to the pictures being converted to characters.

Take the document back to the Word 2007 machine where you had it open and saved, that is your best bet.
