Run the connection wizard again. If you setup yourself with a static IP at the party and your LAN at home is Dynamic you will have to convert back to DHCP. Did you change your workgroup also? If so you will need to switch back.
Could you give a little info on your Home LAN?

Basically my home lan is just a router with a cable modem hooked up to it.

I can't remember exactly what he did but I know he typed a couple of ip adresses somewhere.

I am not really good with networks so I am not all that sure what static and dynamic means and stuff like that.

If you don't know you are probilily on Dynamic(DHCP). Which means your router does all the work
Got to Start>My Network places (right click)>Properties>LAN (right click)>Properties>
Open TCP/IP and set the IP address field to "Obtain Automaticly" in the DNS field also set to "Obtain Automaticly". Leave the rest alone.
