Would you please post the make and model of this computer?

How much RAM do you have?

How large is your hard drive, and how much free space does it have?

The machines that I've experienced this with usually have a lack of RAM. But with 2G of RAM this obviously isn't the problem, and you have ample swap space on the hdd.

What type of applications are you running when this occurs?

If you don't have any applications running and try to access the control panel, does the flashlight still indicate a search?

This will happen anytime I can go from desktop to My Computer with nothing running and the flashlight starts.

This usually happens when My Computer is having trouble reading from an emunerated device. Can you send us a screen shot of your My Computer window when it comes up?

First thing I'd do is go through each device and listed in My Computer and see if any of them are taking a long time to access.

Have you performed any general maintenance on your computer like a defrag or disk check? Are other programs slow as well? Do you have any networked drives attached or printers?

You can try this:

Open up Folder Options from the Tools menu in Windows Explorer
Choose the view tab
Uncheck the box for “Automatically search for network folders and printers”, and close the dialog.

Do you have any removable media installed, this can also cause this to appear. Also have you ran any tests on the hard drive?

What kind of Hard Drive are we dealing with?

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Hello,

This could very well be related to the infection that you are receiving assistance with here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic349241.html

Cryptodan asked a pertinent question, have you run any tests on your hdd?

Find out who the manufacturer is of you hdd, go to their website and download their diagnostic test and run it. If there is a short test and a long test, run the long test.

You might wan to run chkdsk C: /f.

Go to Start, click on Run, and type cmd in the box and then click OK.

A black page will open with a blinking cursor, type in the chkdsk c: /f and then press the enter key.

Just to make sure, your "Automatically search for network folders and printers" is ticked off, correct? You didnt hit [X] or Cancel when closing the dialog.

Let me ask you this, do you have any digital camara or webcam drivers installed? This kind of delay can also be caused by a poorly written driver with the camara detatched. Try turning off your WIA service temporarily and see if this issue goes away.

From command prompt type:

net stop "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)"

then try opening My Computer and see if the problem persists.

Edit: This can also be caused by partially installed or corrupted virtual drive drivers being loaded. Do you have installed or have had installed any virtual cdrom drives or the like, such as daemon tools, or alchohol 100% or anything?

Cryptodan asked a pertinent question, have you run any tests on your hdd?

Ran DLGDIAG for windows.long verison everything was perfect.
Tried running WIA,but nothing happened.
disconnected my webcam, and usb mouse.

made no difference to my computer.
I have not installed any virtual cdrom drives or daemon tools, as for the alchohol well that gets drunk

nothing has changed

Do not run the windows version of any hardware diagnostics. Please run the DOS version. It will give you better access to the hard drive since Windows will not be involved.
