I`m not going to rule out the speakers, but half the time he doesn`t even bother to turn them .He`s like me,we use the computers just to check our E-mail,and every once in awhile to look something up on the internet. He use`s it less than me.He still use`s a dial-up connection and will not change.I will check out his speakers first, but how hard is it to check the speaker connection to the motherboard?Would this be something I could check or change? And about how much would a new speaker connection cost? Just A Guess-ta-mint.

On most computers there is a green female audio jack on the rear of the computer which the speaker's male green plug is connected. Unplug it and plug in the other set of speakers.

Depending on its connection to the motherboard it could be as simple as re-soldering a new one in place. The problems are finding a suitable replacement and how good your soldering skills are.
