We're getting somewhere

Haha ya. I have tried it twice now and both times the computer stays in sleep mode.

Ya, sure don't want that to happen...hence why I'm trying to find the source now  Also my Windows update is set to 'Check for updates but let me choose when to download & install them', with no time schedule given on it.

Thanks guys.
Thanks.

Good
Now, if you really want to find the culprit, you'll need a lot of time and a lot of patience.

Go back to "msconfig" and re-enable ONE service from the list of services, you just disabled.
Restart computer, try sleep.
Doing OK?
Re-enable next service, restart computer, try sleep.
Still OK?
Re-enable next service and so on until you find the culprit.
If you're done with services and the sleep feature still works fine, proceed with startups.

I noticed that the word network was used a couple of times. Are you on a network? I just recently found that my home pc had never shut down in the last 6 months because I was being used as a server for some a*&holes in China,Australia and other places. Do some thorough research or take it to an expert you can trust. Seems like they're just hacking into everyone just to use their systems, nothing has been used or stolen from me yet, just my trust. Nothing against any advice you've been given here!! I was just blown away at what I found, how they were doing it, what I was missing, and the fights they're putting up trying to get them locked out. I'm leery about everything now. Be very thorough in going through your settings and system.....Good luck

Thanks, well I've taken my laptop places so it's connected to a few different networks before, yet this problem still occurs (even with both wifi turned off and ethernet unplugged). I'll be doing more system scans though to make sure, thanks for the thought

Thanks, still making my way through the stuff . So far so good though.
Interestingly, my netbook now seems to be having this problem too. However it puts itself into hibernation afterward, not sure though whether it's because of heat build-up due to it being inside its computer case. (I would put it in standby, then store it in its case and go about my business. When I take out my computer later I discover it's in hibernation instead of standby; looking into event viewer there are logged events during the time the computer should have been off. Seems to indicate it was running for a while during that time span). I haven't installed any recent common software that I can recall.
Should I run through the same procedure with it too and try to nail the culprit?
Thanks.

Check your power options. There is a setting for "Hibernate after..."

There is also a setting to "Allow wake timers" (in Windows 7 at least, can't remember if it's there in Vista).

Sorry, I should have also mentioned that (for the netbook) it is actually a Windows XP computer (let me know if I should open up a new thread in XP instead). I don't believe I have set it to hibernate automatically at all (unless low battery) - but I'll double-check that
Thanks.
