I have a Thinkpad T42 with Win XP Pro. It worked fine with hibernate. then sometime ago I lost this feature...After reset, the option to hibernate appears on the shutdown list of options. but when trying it, it will not go to hibernation, although it reports that it is trying to. no error report is posted. it just goes back to desktop screen. no the hibernate option on the shutdown list is gone even though I see that hibernation is enabled. any suggestions?

Try removing the hibernate function, then turning back on

right click desktop

properties

screensaver tab

power button

Hibernate tab

Check the Enable hibernation box, reboot

defrag the Disk (I use http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

then reverse what you did above to re enable it

hi David,
the problem is a bit more complicated
after a failed hibernation as I described above, the hibernate tab is no longer available in the power manager.
it will appear again, only after reset.
i did however try to disable hibernation (right after reset) and then reset again and then enable again.
that didn't solve the problem
i haven't done disk defrag yet, but my disk is far from being full.
i can still do that if you think that is worthwhile to try

thanks

Sometimes such problems are linked to video drivers, I would try uninstalling same (via Device Manager). then rebooting and reinstalling the video drivers.
