Hi there,

I am no longer getting any sound from my XP system - have checked the obvious things, so thought I;d try to check which of my audio related driver software is out of date and can be updated.

Any suggestions on any trustworthy freeware that can do this?

Cheers,

Simon.

It would be a great help if you were to post the make and model of your computer.

If the old drivers were working, they should still work as long as they aren't corrupted.

Not knowing if the audio is integrated with the motherboard or a dedicated card I can only guess if the drivers are native to the operating system. Check in the Device manager to see if there are any errors appearing in Sound, video and game controllers.

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Device Manager. Scroll down to the controllers and click on the + to expand the tree.

The indicators of errors are a yellow question mark, a yellow dot with an exclamation mark inside, or a red X.

Hi simonx98, I'd be EXTREMELY careful using freeware driver updating programs, they tend to mess up drivers and corrupt them. If you can find out what type of sound driver and brand sound driver you have, i would recommend going to the manufacturers website to get reliable driver updates, or post the sound driver information here a i'm sure eventually someone will be able to point you to the manufacturers site where the download is, good luck!

they all looked good in there - no error flags.
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running XP Home Sp3.
Thanks.

I've already specified Dell Dimension Desktop 8300 this is the link to all the types of drivers available for that computer: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...tid=&impid=. They are organize dinto sections, one of them is audio which has a driver update and sound blaster updates, not sure from there you'll have to try to figure out more about which of the 3 you may want. Good luck!

Use the link below to take you to the Dell support page with your drivers. Scroll down the page till you see the three download options.

Edited to include your audio.

thanks!
I have tried selecting all three audio options, two or just one - each time it tells me it needs to install the DellDriverDownloadManager.application which I do (upto 8 of them now!) but after it is saved I run it and am told "There are no files to download. Please go to Drivers and Downloads to select files" - but the files are already selected, tried unselecting and reselecting just one, two or all three to no avail.

Clearly I am being thick, but I can't work it out! Polite suggestions welcome.

not getting anywhere with that I went to Sounds and Devices via Control Panel to update Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM) to 12/12/2006 6.0.1.124.1 but when I restarted the PC it failed with

"A Driver Has Overrun A Stack Based Buffer"
blah blah
*** STOP: 0x000000F7 (0x00000000, 0x0000EA73, 0xFFFF158C, 0x00000000)

So I'm in Safe Mode rolling it back to 26/03/2003 5.12.1.328 ....

ROLLED BACK okay fortunately, so back to sq1 - tried Dell driver link from IE instead of Firefox and it works :-) so downloading now ....

well drivers updated (one of them didn;t apply - SoundBlaster) but still no sound.

I have a Dell MMS 5650 speaker system - there are a yellow, black and green cable into the PC - one thing I notice with them all out is that if I touch the black one to the PC casing there is a loud buzz from all the speakers ... don't know if this is helpful or not. Even the rear ones which have never worked since I bought the thing (with the PC) years ago.

Cheers .. Simon.

Did this speaker system work before?

Have you tried this speaker system on another computer?

WHat color is the jack that the speakers are plugged into?
Double check to make sure they are in the lime green jack
In the beginning there was the command line.

a cable comes out of the back of the 5650 main-unit/subwoofer and has three plugs for the PC - lime-green, yellow and black which are plugged into the same coloured jacks in the back of the 8300.
