First, I would only get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Using the startup disk, I can get to the DOS prompt. Safemode will not start either. I was messing around and copied some system files onto the C drive (following suggestions on the readme.txt file) Now the windows startup screen comes up before I get messages that DBBUFF.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS are missing or corrupted and WIN.COM cannot be found.
Second, I only have the Windows98 Upgrade CD. When reinstalling, I would have to load the OLD Windows3.1 disks in order to use the upgrade CD. Now however, the first diskette is corrupted. I really don't want to get XP. Should I fork out some money for an OEM 98SE CD?
All this is happening on a Celeron700 with I-don't know-how-much RAM.

At the DOS prompt C:\ run scandisk and let us know what turns up.
Just type C:\scandisk and hit enter.

It may only fix a few items at one time. Try re-running it several times. You may want to run defrag. C:\defrag
