i couldn't find scan disk on the tools tab, i only read error checking, backup, and defragment

An inconsistency in Windows could be causing some confusion here:
scandisk = the error checking tool
defrag = the (disk) defragmenter tool

So what I was originally suggesting was you run the error checking tool in safe mode with the 'Thorough' and 'Fix' options checked. Reading back I'm not sure if that has been done yet.

Please run this and let us know how many bad sectors it reports when it has finished.
(Note you may have to let it run undisturbed for some hours. You don't have to wait for it, the error report will stay on the screen until it is closed.)

Rimmer would it of benifit to boot from a floppy system disk, since this is windows 98, and run scandisk and defrag from it? That way nothing on the hard drive is active.
Just a thought.

I've now been getting virus notices since my little brother tried 2 click on a video.
The virus said:
Scan type: Real time protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus Name: Trojan.Popper
File: C;//Windows/system/202_app13.exe
location: C://Windows/System
Computer: Pavillion
Clean Failed, Quarantine Failed, Access Denied

Since the access was denied. I just then went to start the scan disk and then a note popped up saying:
Scandisk has restarted 10 times b/c windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable Scan Disk to finish. Do you want to continue receiving this warning?
I said yes and then canceled my scandisk and then went online to tell u guyz what has happened after i had to restart and shut down a couple of times.

Also i've been getting a note saying:
could note intialize installation. Could not extract Wise0123.dll to 'c:/Windows/TEMP/GLC60B4.TMP: Crc does not match

am i screwed up?

Go online and update your Symantec anti-virus definitions and anything else you have. Then log off, resart in safe mode and run an anti-virus scan and all your other anti-spyware scans there.

Well now is a good time to get some. The ones I regard as essential I listed in post #11.

You should also get this :
[*]Ewido Security Suite complements anti-virus software by specializing in detecting Trojans, Dialers and Spyware and lots of other stuff. It is free for private use.
Download it from here: Ewido download
When installing it untick 'Install Background Guard' and 'Install Scan via Context Menu'.
