Ran the scan, install disk was NOT requested, and the computer did not reboot automatically.

I have a normal desktop now. What's next?

Everything is looking good, no other problems?

Well, no problems in that there's no popups & false warnings, but both Ascentive Active Speed & Performance Center are still present. I am unable to uninstall Active Speed, but at least Performance Center no longer appears in the 'Add/Remove Programs' list. Also, I am still unable to uninstall either Mcaffee and Norton (although this may be unrelated to the Ascentive problem, it seems related to the Windows Installer Service).

What happens when you try uninstalling McAfee / Norton? You can maybe try the removal tools, they'll be on their respective websites.

Neither Mcaffee or Norton were forthcoming with any specific tools for removing their products from a computer. When I try to uninstall either program I get the message: the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. I tried to uninstall Bearshare, and I get: could not open Install.log file. I tried to remove ActiveSpeed, and I get: Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Am I dealing with a 'clean' system, with an OS that's been crippled by all the malware that's been running on it?

Hi there,

I didn't think the machine had been crippled by the malware, but it's still a possibility.

Try running the steps in the link below and see if it resolves the "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed" error.

Okay, McAffee is gone & most of Norton - I'll deal with LiveUpdate later. I'll keep limping along, going to try the XP repair & see how far that gets me. ActiveSpeed is still on the 'Add/Remove Programs' list.

Thanks for being so patient.

Is ActiveSpeed still running at all? Or is it just in your Add / Remove programs list?

ActiveSpeed appears to be on the 'Add/Remove' only.

And you get an error trying to remove it? My guess is that it has already been removed, and only the registry value keeping it in the Uninstall list is still there.

This seems to be the case. Anything else to do? I have some other Windows related repairs to do I think...

Hardware manager doesn't recognize USB ports or the network card.

Maybe try reinstalling the drivers? They should be on your manufacturer's website.

Was working on it. I think we can plant the flag & declare victory over the forces of malware.

Thanks for your help.
