I run XP SP3. Automatic updates is turned on and works all the time except this one:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 (KB953297)

It would seem that this is an old update as I run SP3 and this appears to be an SP1 update.

If there are more updates it installs them but fails on this one.

The machine works fine.

Is this a symptom of a larger issue?

Thank You

That update means it is for .NET Framework 1.1-SP1. SP1 refers to the NET Framework, not your XP version.
Go to the Windows Update website, let it scan your computer for updates and this update shows again, try to install it there. If it fails again then don't worry about it.
Have you checked your"Add/Remove Programs" to see if you have .NET Framework 1.1 installed on your computer,or .NET Framework 1.1 SP1?

The Add/Remove list has the following

.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1

I will run the scan. I guess i will need to reinstall IE to do that.

Thanks

I would just uninstall NET Framework 1.1, using Add/Remove Programs. It's outdated.

When I remove it, I get the following message.

"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed"

??

Hmmm, see http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/450/when-wi...tall-a-program/.

Now...I would not run the suggested fix . Rather...I would try to install Windows Installer 4.5.

If that fails to resolve it, then I would try the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool. I've read some negative things about it and MS has pulled support (probably because of these negative things)...so I'd like to try an alternative (IMO) approach first.

I installed windows Installer 4.5 (I think I did). No change.

Windows Installer Cleanup Tool does not list NET Framework 1.1. It does list the other versions.

Lets try your other fix

There is a tool that we can use to uninstall all versions of NET Framework currently on your system. I have run this on my system and it works, so I have no problem suggesting it.

Dotnetfix Cleanup Tools - http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live....leanup_tool.zip

That's part 1.

Part 2 consists of downloading/installing NET Framework 3.5, SP1 anew. This is all that your system should need. It will reinstall what you currently reflect for Framework 2.0 and Framework 3.0.

I got thru both of those tasks. At this point I do NOT have the Windows Update shied in the tray.

Add/Remove shows the following:
.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1

If that is OK then I think it is fixed.

Thanks much

I would have thought that the 1.1 Hotfix would have disappeared, unless you installed it as a separate item for some issue.

I would see if that uninstalls, the others are fine.

Hotfixes may not be considered part of the NET install package, since most (if not all) are eventually incorporated into subsequent critical updates...I don't know, I've never had to install a hotfix for anything. My understanding of hotfixes is they are first aid, prior to a visit by the doctor.

OK, this morning I had updates. I installed them and got the following message:

Some updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)
Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB983583)
Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86 (KB963707)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

I think this is all the updates that were set to be installed.

I think your auto update mechanism is screwed...I suggest not using and just manually going to the Windows Update site when you want updates.

I don't use auto-updates for XP, so I never have update problems that allow me to learn how to overcome auto updates malfunctions.

Sounds like a plan!

Thanks for your help
