MS claims that XP will run well on 512MB of RAM, the truth of the matter is that it doesn't really start to work well until you have 1034MB of RAM.

Slow - Not Using All RAM?

I agree completely. But it ran adequately before the slowdown so there should be no need to buy more RAM to get back to that point. I'll be happy just to get it performing as it was.

The recommendation to use Process Explorer came to me from the Virus forum just before it was mentioned here. I found that Windows Update was monopolizing memory. I turned off automatic update (notify only) and the problem seems to have been resolved. I'll run the system for a week or so to be sure, but I'm confident that wuauclt.exe is the perpetrator. I've had trouble with WU before (many others have too). Thanks all, for you your help. JSntgRvr got there first this time, but using Process Explorer was the key to finding the source.
