I am running Windows XP on a Dell Vostro but my 4.0 Gb USB flashdrive has suddenly stopped working. The removable drive F: does appear on the Windows Explorer screen, but
- Windows Explorer yields the response: Please insert a disk into drive F;
- The format command yields: There is no disk in drive F; Please insert a disk and try again.
- The Properties link shows that the drive has capacity zero, all fully used.
- I tried using the Device Manager but without success.
- Easeus Data recovery program does not recognize the existence of the F drive.
All the data on the drive was backed up and a replacement costs about $20, so I have not lost anything
but I would very much like to learn what has happened.
1. Could this have been caused by inadvertently unplugging the USB while it was not safe to do so?
2. Is there some software that would permit me to recover the files or at least, reformat the drive?
3. Or Is this just a hardware malfunction and I should discard the drive?

I've been having the same issues on XP Pro sp 3. The first time, I blew out both the flash drive and the port to get a better connection. The second time, it was also a 4G usb drive, and I had to fool around in device manager, unplug it and plug it back in again, before XP condescended to recognize it. It refused to find the files. It worked fine when I plugged it into a different machine, also XP Pro sp 3. Still scratching my head. It may be that the bigger flash drives are confusing XP.

Thank you Boopme and Blathnat. I followed the link and tried this and various other things. I also created a Rescue disk but that also did not work.
I have decided to scrap the flash drive and purchase another, but armed with the useful knowledge that a flash drive can stop working at any time without any obvious reason and should therefore always be backed up.

Your computer recognize USB port, but not a flash drive

Very unlikely. If you remove the drive, while Windows is still writing to it, you may have some data corruption, but I doubt, it can damage the drive
Flash drives don't last for ever.

I always take a little extra time to "safely remove" my flash drives.
My first big one, a one gig bought refurbed for 50$ is still going strong, long ago and far away.
An associate goes thru one a month or so just jerking them out.
My 4 gig is 6 months old and should last a few years or more.
Why?

I don't know.
I always just remove them without clicking on anything first.
I have quite a few of them. So far, all in working condition.
I may be lucky though....LOL
