BleepingComputer.com: winxp sp2 and ahci support

I'm currently reading the VirtualBox manual and it said there was no support for AHCI in winxp sp2. Is this correct? Was there an MS update that enabled AHCI support or do SATA HDD manufacturers provide the software?

It's the SATA controller that needs the support, so the controller manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer supply the relevant driver.

So if you were installing winxp on SATA drives, would the installation stop at some point for you to install the drivers for the SATA controller?

Yes, at the start of the installation you're asked to press F6 if you will want to install third party drivers such as SCSI drivers. The AHCI (SATA) drivers fall into the same category. The XP setup expects to find them on a floppy disk, and if you pressed F6 when the instruction appeared at the bottom of the screen, it will look on the FDD for drivers to copy when it gets to that stage in the install. If you're installing onto a system with no legacy FDD, the best solution is to create a CD with the SATA drivers slipstreamed. I had to do that when I downgrade licensed an XP install on my Vista laptop, I used nLite to integrate the Intel ICH8 drivers for my systemboard, as well as SP3. It wouldn't use a USB FDD for the drivers, although I understand that worked for some people on some systems.
