Hi. I keep hosting a local server on the Battlefield 1942 multiplayer demo in order to practice alone, because I thought that hosting locally meant it would only appear on my comp, but I keep getting people connecting, who refuse to speak, or when they do speak, they fail miserably at it! So what? Are they hackers or do I simply not understand what a local server is? And I'm using dialup by the way, no LAN or anything.

Difference between local and internet servers?

From the sound of it a local server would imply that you are setting up a server for others to see online and if they so choose to play on. I am suprised however that anyone would choose to play on a dial-up server as I expect they list latency for the server on the connect to server page and that must be a horrid latency rating.

Yes, but I can choose either "Local server" or "Internet server" so I don't see why it would show up in the internet list.

From the Server FAQ, I'd guess you may need to set game.serverInternet 0 in the ServerSettings.con file. Your local server should then not advertise to the master servers, if I understand the instructions correctly.

Hmm. How odd. I would think selecting Local Server would take care of a thing like that automatically. Well, thank you for your help. I'll try this next time and see if anyone gets on. Thanks again.

Hope it works. Local server doesn't mean it only operates locally, it means it's situated on the local network (local server not remote server).

So you mean, when I host it locally, people connect to my computer, but if I click the Internet button, they connect to... some other server, like the master server?

Yes, that sounds like a good explanation.
