I have installed Windows 95 on an older PC. Most or all programs that I place or install on the system indicate an access violation.

One exception is MS Excel version 5. It works fine.

Example error message:

Access violation at address 005FD73A in module "remote control.exe". Read of address FFFFFFFF.

As I said, this happens will any or almost any program I install or place on the machine, so I don't think it is specific to, "remote control.exe". However I will upload it anyway.

Additionally, all of these programs work fine on another PC running Windows Vista.

Any insight will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum!!

Can you give us some examples of the programs that you are trying to install?
I'm wondering if they will work with 95. I know that Excel 5 does

Also, does the access violation occur during installation or after the program is installed and when attempting to run it?

Thanks!
In the beginning there was the command line.

Yes.

"Treepad Business Edition" http://www.treepad.com/download/#tpbiz

will not install and or run. "For Windows 7, XP, Vista, 200x, NT, 9x, ME and Linux/Wine."

And before anyone asks, yes I'm trying to install the windows version.

"Winrar" (for windows exclusively if I recall) also.

If I can install these, (if I recall correctly they installed without difficulty), they would not run, and gave error messages similar to the above.

Another error message about remote control .exe (a very simple ebook I created which works fine on my other Win. Vista system. And yes, Treepad/Winrar show similar messages upon closing):

remote control.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

REMOTE CONTROL caused an exception eedfadeH in module <unknown> at 0000:00000000 ...

(remote control.exe is about 1.5 megs ... too large for upload parameters.)

Thanks again.

edit:

update:

I am onto some new data. The problems, some of them, MAY have to do with trying to install 32bit programs onto a 16bit system.

Advise ignore this. I will repost when/if I get more data.

Thank you.

Just out of curiosity which version of Windows 95 are you running? Do you have any service packs installed?

Bruce.
Please take notice. Oreo and I will not be available until June of 2012.
Thank you for understanding my absence, it is job and college related, so all is good. If I do not answer your PMs this is the reason why. See you all soon!

They didn't do service packs for Win95 Bruce. They did 3 versions of Win95 A, B and C, I have B and C.

Thanks for your input and sorry for quoting my question incorrectly.

I knew Microsoft had updated win 95 somewhere along the line just before windows 98 first edition was released, I jumped on Windows 98 first edition as soon as it came out for the USB support.

Well I'm going back 14 years when I used Win95 but I think it will tell you the version if they right-click on My Computer and select Properties at the bottom. I sure mine said Windows 95 B and C when that was installed, I don't think it shows A the same as Win98 doesn't show First Edition as some people think it does it only shows Second Edition.

Yes Bruce its the B at the end. I forgot about the build numbers. I write VB programmes as my sig used to show. The build numbers are

Windows 95 - 950
Windows 95 OSR 2- 1111
Windows 98 - 1998
Windows 98 Second Edition - 2222
Windows ME - 3000
Windows NT4 - 1381
Windows 2000 - 2195
Windows XP - 2600
Windows 2003 Server - 3790
Windows Vista - 6000
Windows Vista SP1 - 6001
Windows Vista SP2 - 6002
Windows 7 - various numbers but start with 7xxx

So I would say you have Windows 95 B.

They didn't do service packs for Win95 Bruce. They did 3 versions of Win95 A, B and C, I have B and C.

Edit: Typo

Kieth those versions are called service packs. Windows 95 came in 3 service pack modes. Windows 95A, B and C. B and C included USB Support and C included Windows 98 like functions like Active Desktop. Windows 95 and 95A were recommend to be ran on older systems without PCI Buses. Windows 95B was the recommended version to be ran on Modern systems with PCI Buses, and Windows 95C was a test version to see if your machine could handle Windows 98.

So technically Mr Bruce is correct.

Sorry I wouldn't call Win95 B or C service packs. The fact that they have made updates over the years doesn't class them as a service pack. A service pack means you can download the updates not buy a new version. There have never been any for Win95.
