BleepingComputer.com: Data Execution Prevention error from Explorer.exe

Hi there,

Every so often, explorer.exe crashes for some reason. This has been occurring for about 3 months now and I'm just getting around to troubleshooting it.
Nothing leads up to this error but it easily fixes itself and restarts the explorer.exe process so I haven't worried about it.

My system is running Windows XP SP2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've attached the error files from the last crash.

The only one that is too large to attach is explorer.exe.hdmp which is 44.7 mb and explorer.exe.mdmp which won't attach.

The first thing that I would suggest is to download service pack 3. Another consideration would be to switch to a stand alone browser, such as Firefox. The following information will explain why there is modicum of added security with the use of a stand alone browser.

The following is an excerpt from this article.

"Firefox is less vulnerable to certain attacks than Internet Explorer is because it does not support ActiveX, Microsoft's technology for sharing information among applications. ActiveX allows programs to be downloaded to a computer without the user's knowledge, he says, providing opportunities to writers of viruses and spyware. "Firefox doesn't have any of that technology, and so we think that that provides users with an extra level of protection."

For the record, I think IE is evil and I only use Firefox or Chrome and sometimes Chromium which is even faster.

Also, I've had problems with SP3 in the past.

Wow... I've been away for a while. Let's back up and look at this again. SP3 is mostly about security issues. To see that you are having this type of problem makes me wonder if it a security issue, or operating system related problem. Please read the following article. hmmmm...that's a bit long there.

What am I supposed to be looking for?

I downloaded Security Task Manager and it states explorer.exe is harmless and signed by Microsoft.

Btw, Animal promised I'd get help not more work.

The problem was fixed by installed Windows XP Service Pack 3.

For the record, we don't normally close threads and deletions only occur under certain circumstances.
