BleepingComputer.com: Two problems with Toshiba Satellite

My husband has a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 that is most likely dying even though it's barely a year old.
It has a complicated past involving a terrible virus that caused us to have to reinstall windows. That was quite a while ago and had been working just fine until last week.

The two main problems:

• The high definition audio driver keeps failing to install, so there's no sound.
  
• The USB ports don't work and are completely missing from device manager.

I have tried so many things that I feel my last resort is reinstalling windows. Here is what I've tried:

1. Booting in safe mode to reinstall missing drivers
2. Checked the BIOS (and updated the software)
3. Uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers
4. Used System Restore
5. Scanned for viruses, etc.

I might be leaving some things out, but I've been round & round with this laptop and have exhausted all of my capabilities. The laptop came with a recovery disk, but it would require a complete wipe of the HD which my husband isn't quite ready to do.

What really confuses me is the USB tree simply not showing up in the device manager like there just isn't one even though USB is enabled in BIOS.

Any other suggestions?

and try to install it...and tell what happen

about usb....please check on BIOS setup...does you really enable usb...keyboard / mouse / storage (legacy device)

I tried installing that driver, but I have a code 10 (device cannot start) on both that and the high def audio controller in system devices:

I rechecked BIOS again and everything is enabled.

Hopefully you will be able to find your audio driver here.

If not, then you should use this link below which is the Realtek download web site.

have you installed all driver before??? except audio...
try uninstall audio driver and restart...after restart try install ir again

I cannot open your realtek link...please check that link link...
and I already give direct link on that toshiba page...so she dont need to bother to find audio driver...

I've tried both sites with no luck, even after uninstalling & restarting.

I read your opening post and realize you mentioned you had a virus at some point on this computer.

There are viruses out there that can damage hardware through firmware corruption.

There may be issues with your Windows installation being corrupted.

You should try opening the command prompt and try typing SFC /scannow to see if your your OS has corruption.

Look for the tab that says USERS GUIDE and click on that tab. This is a PDF document, you can save it to your desktop if you want. You'll need adobe reader in order to view this document.

Go to page 155 of this document and read about how to use the hardware utility, I believe it also displays as an icon on your laptop's screen when you press the FN key on the keyboard.

You should run those utilities to see if they fix the problems you are having.

I had problem with TOSHIBA SATELLITE L500-1XJ , there is DVD super Multi Drive , but when I insert Microsoft professional 2010 into this drive , it did not work
I also insert DVD-video , it also did not work. This drive just read CD only. My laptop is running Windows7
I would be grateful if you can show me how to read and install Microsoft professional 2010 application into my laptop.

I've run the hardware utility and all the Toshiba diagnostics. It completely skips the USB test.
