Can't detect my cd/dvd drive

Dell i6000, SP3.

Suddenly the cd rom/dvd drive icon has vanished from "My Computer".

I tried that regedit solution where you find & delete the lower & upper filters. Nada.
I checked the Device Manager & a cd/dvd driver wasn't on the list. So I went ahead & let it suggest choices. None turned up as cd rom/ dvd drive. When I went to "Add hardware", it eventually led me to a big list of manufacturers. I replaced the original drive w/ a new one & cannot, for my life now, recall what make it is.

All this is strange because I replaced it many many months ago & had been just fine.

What now? Thanks.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Thanks for the reply.

I wasn't sure if my Device Man. even listed a cd-rom thing. All I did see was "Disk drives" & then a sub-listing named "wdc wd800ve-75hdt1".
I didn't wanna risk uninstalling something I wasn't 100% sure about. I already tried option #2 (forgot to mention)

So I did options 3 & 4 & neither worked. Still no sign of my missing icon. :thumbsup:

I Googled around & read stuff about loose/ detached cables(?)

That's your hard drive.

That may very well be it. I'm just now trying to push the eject button on it & it won't open/ no green blinking light....

OK. Soooo I arbitrarily pushed the eject button of my cd rom drive & it not only opens, but the icon is back in 'My Computer".

No idea what was different this time, but part of me wants to knows what the problem was so it doesn't happen again.

is that a laptop???
if yes maybe you need to manually fix those cable...just push it a litle bit to make cd drive reconigzed...
sometimes those cable inside the laptop loose their tie...
but if you dont know how to do it...please bring your laptop to computer repair shop...or if you want to do it...please proceed with you own risk...

Yeah, it's a laptop. If the procedure requires more than opening the dvd drive thingy, then I probably will take it to a pro. If not, I'll probably do what I did when I replaced the old one & find visual help on Youtube.

I wasn't aware, it was a laptop.
There are no cables involved here, but what you can do, you can slide the out (after removing holding screw) and slide it back.
It may restore power connection.
