BleepingComputer.com: Sub Woofer Not Working

Howdy,

My PC gave out last week and I was given one by a friend.

I just hooked up my stereo speakers which consist of 2 speakers and a sub woofer. The speakers work but not the sub woofer. I checked the connections several times and I believe them to be correct.

I went to the manufactures web site and it says this stereo system does not require a driver.

I just downloaded the latest Java update and in the box this message came up.

"Sub woofer output not working on c-media AC97".

I googled that and I have not found answer that works. One suggested that I go to my sound devices and and make sure that it is set properly. I tried surround sound with no luck and I tried 5.1 surround with no luck.

I am using Windows Media 11 which I just downloaded.

Any ideas ?

Telling us which speakers you have might help. Subwoofer out is rarely (if ever) used on 2.1 speakers. Java has nothing to do with audio.

This is how Java came into play.

I just happened to check Java to see if there were any new updates. I did not have the speakers in mind, I was just checking as I routinely do. Java 6 Update 21 was available. I clicked to download it. As it started to download it stopped and a Java retangular box popped up and it gave the above information regarding the sub woofer output. I continued the download.

I have no idea why Java brought up the sub woofer. I assumed it did so as some sort of diagnosis of my computer while downloading the update. ??

Anyway that is what it said so I assumed that was my specific problem.

I had googled sub woofer not working earlier in the day looking for help. After Java gave me more specific information I tried googling that. Still no help. So here I am on Bleeping computer.

Below is my speaker system.( I-Trigue 3400 Model) The link is from the manufactures site.

As a side note: The speaker system was working fine on my old computer which was a Dell desktop model 4600C.

I now have a Dell Optiplex 170L desktop.

Java is merely a runtime environment for applications that need it. I doubt your onboard audio utilizes Java at all.

The Creative I-Trigue 3400 uses a single speaker connection, using the green connector out the back of your sound card. That goes to the sub. From there are red and white connectors for your left and right speakers. The subwoofer uses a high pass filter to prevent bass from going to the satellite speakers.

Check your audio control panel for your sound card. Ensure that your system is set for 2 speakers only and not 4.1 or 5.1.

These are my sound choices. I see no mention of 2.1 ??

This is my set up for the sub woofer.

The light green (top) says audio input.

The white and next black are connected where it says AUX in/Volume control. (My on/ off and volume controller)

The next 2 black are connected to my speakers.

The last black is my power.




This is a shot of the back of my PC.

Light green coming from sub woofer.

Next two,dark green and purple go to my keyboard and mouse.

Dark blue is going to my monitor.






I don't know if the above is any help at all but I thought I would post it just in case.

I see you have it set to "Desktop stereo speakers" correct? Your connections look good.

Have you tried this on another computer? You can also plug that 3.5mm phono jack into a CD player to test the audio.

No I have not tried another computer yet.

As I mentioned they were working perfectly on my old one but maybe I messed something up somewhere along the line.

Speaking of desktop, I don't know if this means anything or not. I have 2 wires coming out of my monitor. One plug is green and the other is black. They are not connected to anything. ?? I think one of them must be for the monitor speakers.

The only thing connected to my monitor is the dark blue plug from the PC.

I will see if I can get my hands on a CD. If not I will take the speakers to my friends house and give them a try on his computer.

Yeah, those would be speakers in your monitor. You can disregard them.

If set to "Desktop stereo speakers" then the green connector will be outputting full range. At that point the subwoofer amp would split the low frequencies to the subwoofer and upper frequencies to the satellites.

I meant to ask. I bought a new laptop the day my PC died. I have it set up wireless.

Can I connect these speakers to it for a test ?

Yes, just connect it to the headphone jack.

Gave it a try, no luck.

The speakers work fine but the woofer won't 'woof '.

I suppose it is time to buy a new system.
