Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been told that you need to have an IDE cable that supports cable select for it to work properly. Is there any way to easily tell if it will work with the "Cable Select" Jumper for an IDE drive?

If the cable is an 80-wire UDMA cable, then by specification it is supposed to function as a CS cable, but generally there's no visible indication. The end device will be Master, the centre device Slave.
If it's an older 40-wire cable, it's very unlikely to be CS. If it is, there is sometimes a visible notch clipped out to break one conductor in the cable, but this doesn't have to be so, the non-connection can be inside a plug. If a 40-wire cable is CS, normally the end device is Slave, the centre device Master.
