RE: converting videos from 1 format to another

Here's some info re SOFTWARE TO CONVERT VIDEO FILES that some folks might like to file away for future use:

I contacted the vendor of the Flip camera to ask about software for converting .mp4 files (created by the Flip camera) , and it gave me a list of sites to check out. Ultimately, I obtained a small shareware program called the Prism Video File Converter from www.nchsoftware.com, and it works very nicely. Easy to use, well-behaved, highly intuitive. I recommend this program highly. (And since it;'s shareware, obviously I am not being paid to post this recommendation.)

So far, I've converted a lot of .MP4 files to .WMVs, and the process is quick. I've also converted a few .FLVs to .WMVs.

DRAWBACK: one 20 meg .flv file I had, converted to a .wmv, now is 93 megs in length! By contrast, the .mp4 files converted to .wmv's are roughly the same size.

WMV is a proprietary Microsoft video format. I wouldn't convert to that.

Why would that be illegal?
