Copy and paste image problem

When I copy an image to the clipboard and then paste it into the file I am working on, the picture loses detail and looks more like a colorful collage. I only have this problem on an IBM laptop i just got.

I can click save as to send the image to a file on the hard drive and then browse for it from the program I am using. This imports the picture with no problem. I am trying to find out why clipboard is messing up the image. I have XP SP3.
