Could you tell me what kind of anti-spyware and anti-virus you are using, and is it up to date.

The most common cause of computer problems, slow downs, and system freezes these days are Malware, which refers to Spyware and Viruses that may have infected your computer. In many cases, even common prevention applications fail to protect you against things are designed to trick consumers into accepting them onto their computer.
Here are things you should try.
1. Disable all of the startup items for diagnostic. After you have them disabled, do some testing with your computer. Basically, try to recreate the symptom. If the problem is gone, then you know for sure that it was one of the startup items listed in MSCONFIG. Then you can go in and enouble a group of items at a time to narrow in on what is actually causing the problem.
2. In some cases, MSCONFIG doesn't list all the items that are loaded in your machine, especially some really bad ones. Typically Malware/Spyware loads itself directly in the registry. If you are comfortable with working within the registry, startup items are located here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENT VERSION > RUN
Good luck,
Bill

Ditto for an antivirus program. Don't rely on the Norton on the network.

Agreed with what was said about Norton above ... I've read about too many problems caused indirectly by Norton being on a system. And since there is a viable althernative out there - which happens to be free - why not use it. I use AVG. Avast is also good.
