Ok this is the script, I recently got Knoppix version 4 on dvd and and have been running it off the disk.
All is ok except it's taking a while to sort through the disk for what ever I want, which of course would be the case.
I need to know if I can install it on a partition without any issues and also just how to install it.
I have just formatted a 4gig hdd in XP, how can I transfer knoppix on to this hdd?

Is the whole drive going to be for Knoppix or will it coexist with XP on the same drive?

Hi Acklan
Well I have two hdd's 1x20gb 1x4.5gb
I pulled the stuff I needed off the 4.5 and formatted it, so it will be a stand alone install on that drive rather than 2 partitions on one.
I have been having a bit of a sniff round and most Linux sites say just run it off the cd/dvd.
It's a good cdrw/dvdr but my mem is 128 which I reckon is causing the thing to drag it's derriere.
I would like to get it on a drive though.
I was having a look today on the knoppix disk and there's some wicked little teaching tools for my grandkids.
Cheers.

I have not tried Knoppix yet but I do use another flavor of the Live CD Puppy Linux. It has a option to install directly to the drive but still run in a RAM drive after boot. I have heard most live verison do this. If you bump your ram to 256mb+ that sure cure your problem. I just upgraded my puppy box to 768mb (the limit for Linux I'm told), and I am amazed at the preformance.
I just paid GBP 63.94 on Ebay for 5 256mb RAM PC100.
I'll do some research and get back with you as to if it can be installed direct to a HD. I'm sure it can, me just have to figure out how.
I'll get back to you with some links later.

John

All very informative links there John but I was taken with the very last link with the vidoe type tutorial.
I am also going to print quite a lot off in case it all falls apart somewhere along the line.
God I must have installed Windows hundreds of times but this Linux beast is one strange fish.
Will keep you posted my friend.
Oh one more thing john if I do suceed what will happen on boot up? Will it be a dual boot with the other drive once I have set the bios to hdd as first? Or will I have to constantly alter the hdd as the os I want?

It depends on how you install. I like LILO (LIunx LOader), but you could also use GRUB. And a third option is a boot floppy.

Ok this thing is saying I need to have a drive or a partition at least 8 gig.
I have managed to create a swap file which was too small and now I can't seem to delete it.
It found XP on the 20 gig and the 4 gig no problem.
Root shell, no problem. Checking the disks no problem.
If I need a drive of 8 gb then I'll forget it.
Any more ideas John?

You could try my favorite Linux. grinner.gif

Just picking with you. Put it on the back burner unitl you come across a 10gb or bigger drive. You could go with a bigger drive if you next it with youXP then make the 20 gig a Linux project drive. Other than that no good ideas.
