lost emails lost emails when compacting

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I lost all emails from my inbox that were dated after March 31, 2010. It appears that other folders were not affected. I think the problem occurred when the Outlook Express folders were being compacted. Are these emails lost forever, or are they somewhere on my computer? I have done a search for them but to no avail.
