Our IT setup a VPN on the office server and i'm trying to connect to it through Windows XP. Our IT successfully tested the connection from home using my username and password. I can't connect from home.

What i did:

I followed these instructions i found on the web; they are very straight forward: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/vpn/ht/...pnwindowsxp.htm

I used the user name and password sent to me by IT

I disabled all antivirus and Windows Firewall.

Clicked on the Connect button

The connection starts OK. Little status window shows up and it passes the "connecting to (VPN Name]..." statement and goes to the next step.

The next step is "Verifying User Name and Password". It hangs here, and errors out after 10 seconds with the below message:

Disconnected.
Error 721: The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number.

When i click the More Info button it has 4 points:

  • Make sure modem is functioning properly. (I did that.)

  • Make sure that TCP/IP is installed and configured correctly for this connection. (Its installed, but don't know how to configure it properly).

  • This connection might require a Terminal window. For more information on enabling a Terminal window see Use the Terminal Window feature to log on to a remote computer. (In this help topic, the instructions & screen shots don't match mine: I don't have Interactive logon and scripting under the Security Tab.)

  • Double Check your settings. (I did that.)
Help please.

Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

We don't have an IT department - just a guy that thinks he knows what he's doing, takes a long time to do it, and an even longer to do it right.

Any help is much appreciated!
