No sound on internet-based functions, plus possible other errors

No sound on browser, online games, or other internet based functions. Otherwise, sound is all right everywhere else on the computer.

Possible related error is no thumbnails appearing for some files, until I change the arrangement, then it's temporarily back to normal. Couple of times, video files didn't play sound since this problem appeared, but that problem went away quickly.

Using Windows Vista, Firefox as browser, VLC as primary media player. Switching to other browsers doesn't solve problem either.

Have you checked your sound properties to be sure all your volume controls are not muted or turned down?

Please take notice. Oreo and I will not be available until June of 2012.

First thing I did, sound works fine on my pc overall, it's just internet-based applications that don't work. Updated my flash player, drivers seem up to date, don't get what's going on.

Yes. ALL INTERNET BASED APPLICATIONS, as I've stated over and over before.

Generalizing the problems you are experiencing, I'm guessing the Flash plugin for the browser is the culprit here.

Please try reinstalling it, by downloading it from here.

Uninstall flash with this.

Then reinstall it.

Go Start > Run and type "regsvr32 shmedia.dll".
Go Start > Run and type "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll".

For the first one, an error message popped up saying "module shmedia.dll failed to load" and that "the specified module could not be found."

For the second, a message popped up saying "module shimgvw was loaded, but the entry point DlllRegister Server was not found. Make sure shimgvw.dll is a valid file DLL or OCX file and try again."

I ran it and found some corrupted files it couldn't fix, but beyond that, the instructions couldn't help me out with what to do afterwards.

Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.

Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

It may ask to schedule the check at next reboot. Confirm and then restart your computer to let error checking run.
