A good friend just got a great job in an expanding business. They're going to be making overseas sales for the first time. Does anyone have any advice on what countries do at customs crossings or other local laws that might get someone into trouble? They are fanatical at preserving their clients privacy. Does anyone take an 'empty' pc overseas and do all business via remote access back home?

This question also applies for the tourist. How should one visiting country x prep their laptop before that vacation of a lifetime? Are they going to make me open that TrueCrypt container with all the families financial data?

Yes if they see the Truecrypt container and ask you to open it, you are required to be truthful. Personally I'd Fedex a drive to myself. Then ship it home when done. Also have it stored online.

Never thought about coming home, was thinking of other countries.
As far a shipping a drive can't customs inspect at the loading dock too? Do you know of a list of nations that forbids https via public/pay wifi? While out on work I used to pull into one of St. Pete's Library parking lots and use their wifi to check things out. They're now killing all https access

No I don't know which countries forbid public https. And yes the tougher customs is usually coming home. The odds of a small FedEx package being inspected is well worth the risk of not having to deal with it on your laptop IMHO.

I heard on NPR last week that many laptops have been seized at airports and thoroughly searched. Personally, I'd leave the laptop at home and ship the drive each way as Animal suggested.

Apparently if you travel to Australia customs officers have the power to search your laptop and phone for pornography.

Actually you would be surprised with how much Child Porn has been discovered by Australian Customs on Lap Tops and Mobile Phones.

Just Beware? Each and every Customs are really different.

Just to clarify what I said?

If you answered Yes to having Porno on board, you would be normally taken aside to an Office and just asked some simple Questions, Never in front of your Loved ones. How you answer those Questions and React to them would be how it goes from there. 95% of the time, No Problems.

If you answer No? Trained People and Animals are watching and soon detect if you have some thing to Hide. Then you could have very Serious Problem. They know from attitudes of people.

That is how Psychology works. Trained people can read Body Language.

Honestly, unless you are a Master in Psychology, just don't ever try it on Customs in any Country in the World. Just leave things at Home, unless you know that they will comply with Regulations in each Country you Visit?

Just to clear it up?

Ray.
