Need SATA drivers for new XP install why is this so hard?

Trying to install XP pro on a HP dv2000 laptop. It has a new Hitachi SATA drive upgrade. I see a prompt to press f6 if I want to install drivers. If I don't press f6, I get "windows does not detect a hard drive on this computer". If I do press f6, I am prompted to submit drivers from a FLOPPY DRIVE ONLY.

The Hitachi support site says "you don't need this driver...etc (they're not offered anyway), check with the motherboard maker". The motherboard maker (Wistron) doesn't have a support site that I have been able to find. The various driver update sites either want to scan my computer and auto update which doesn't do me much good, or, they just don't have the driver. I looked through the file db on this site and didn't find anything obviously useful. I used to have a usb floppy drive but I think I threw it away last year. It just gets better.

my plan: 1)HP support (LOL). 2)clone back to an ATA drive. 3)Buy Win7 (!?). 4)Find the floppy drive, copy a driver from the current (corrupted but still booting) install and see what happens. 5)Take the Activia challenge and blog about it in detail.

I can't believe this is stopping me. None of these options sound good to me (esp #5). I'd love an elegant workaround from the overclocked minds at bleeping computer (whooosh !!) <end whine>

I resolved this issue before by going into the system BIOS and changing the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE
See if that takes care of it for you

In the beginning there was the command line.

Eyesee, sorry for jumping in on this.

This may not pertain to your computer, but it will provide some insight:

How to make a SATA Driver so you can use F6.

Can you provide service tag number or something other then a generic model number? I maybe able to assist you once you do that. I have done well over 20 times.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Thanks guys for your help. SUCCESS !!! Not only did the Intel site have my driver. They also have a "f6 floppy utility" that walks you (mostly) step by step through creating the floppy that windows install needs. After choosing your driver, print out the readme for this utility. It's 15 pages but it's a readme you shouldn't skip. I think that is what you were about to steer me to, Crypto. Oh, and I found my generic Sony usb floppy drive. Win setup installed it without a whimper (I won't be throwing it away now!). Many thanks to the Steely Eyed compu-wonks at bleeping computer !!

Nope. Spoke too soon. Now the install has shut down after asking for "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver" to be inserted in drive a:/. Now I have to go track down this driver.

How many more of these "Easter Eggs" are waiting for me??? Any help given will bring to you benefits more numerous than the sands of the Ganges. Yes, you heard that correctly.

I am visualizing a cool tutorial in your tutorials section that suave-ly escorts geek knaves like me through this valley of perils. Hopefully I will be qualified to write that tutorial by later today.

This is from the readme for the driver listed on HP regarding your lap top:

5.3 Pre-Installation Using the F6 Method

Note:
The Steps 1 and 2 can be skipped if you use the F6 Floppy
disk utility provided by Intel. This utility can also be
downloaded from the following website. These methods
are applicable to systems configured for RAID or
AHCI mode.

1. Extract all driver files from the installation package.
See Section 7.2 for instructions on extracting the
files.

2. Create a floppy containing the following files in the root directory:
iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat,

iaStor.sys, and
TxtSetup.oem.

3. At the beginning of the operating system installation, press F6
to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

4. When prompted, select 'S' to Specify Additional Device.

5. When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created in
step 2 and press Enter.

6. At this point you should be presented with a selection
for one of the following depending on your hardware
version and configuration:

- Intel® 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M)

- Intel® 82801ER SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH5R)

7. Highlight the selection that is appropriate for the
hardware in your system and press Enter.

8. Press Enter again to continue. Leave the floppy disk in
the system until the next reboot as the software will
need to be copied from the floppy disk again when setup
is copying files.

thanks for staying w/ me cryptodan. Yup, i left the floppy in the drive after the f6 driver install, but i still got the prompt for (another?) driver right after the format. Pressing Enter earned me a shutdown. I'm thinking next time i'll pull out and re-insert the floppy before pressing Enter.

Are we thinking that it's asking for the same SATA driver used in the f6 process? Or is the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver" perhaps something else??
It sounds like it is asking for a HD driver to me. The game is afoot !!

What is the exact model number of your computer look on the back some place for a label with a set of numbers.

here's those numbers: model HP dv2000t, s/n 2CE6291FL7, p/n EQ883AV.

I've made the mistake of deleting the boot partition of the disk before the format. I had 3 partitions so I thought I would consolidate them. Now the bleeping computer just stops sometime after the "starting windows" message. So. From euphoria to funk. I'm going to do a few pushups, a few crunches, and get back on this thing as soon as I spit out this shame and drink some coffee.

Finally successful (really this time). What I learned: after giving up on the "f6 floppy utility" process. I stalked a tech at Fry's and got him to take a look.

He went into bios and found a "disable sata support" setting. After disabling sata support, XP pro install never again bothered me for a floppy disk. Never again tried to look in the a: drive. Never bothered me for drivers, but continued to support my new Hitachi sata drive without a hiccup. The install went very quickly. And now I'm well enough past it to say evva-thang is nominal.

I sincerely thank everyone at world of bleeping, this site is awesome !! Especially todays winner -EYESEE-... Those benefits more numerous than the sands of the Ganges are winging their way to you RIGHT NOW. I'm sending them over with Lindsey Lohan. I think I hear your doorbell now.
