Overkill? Not quite.
You're welcome to give the notebook a whirl and you'll see what I mean.

I used PIII laptops from Dell before and they were always slow. Of course I am spoiled on a SMP world now.

Yeah, they can become slow, esp. with 256MB of memory.

damn small linux was the best suggestion so far, IMO, but even better now is tiny core linux. great OS, great support at the forum, and it just works. it's a well thought out distro.

Well to put in my 2 cents worth. :flowers:

I have UNBUNTU 10.4 LTS running on an old FIC VA-503+ motherboard with an AMD-K6 500 Mhz processor with 512 Mb of PC100 SDRAM no problems!

Bruce.
Please take notice. Oreo and I will not be available until June of 2012.
Thank you for understanding my absence, it is job and college related, so all is good. If I do not answer your PMs this is the reason why. See you all soon!

Bruce.

If you want a Linux distro that you can be sure will run on older hardware, Slackware is the grand daddy of them all.

With a Pentium 3 you'll probably need an installation that is at i586 or older compatibility.

We are getting spoiled in this day and age, aren't we?

Good hardware is never too old to run Linux. Just have to keep it in perspective.

^ Well, not quite. You need to adapt to the hardware you own.

In this particular case (with XP SP3), I wasn't.

I found the problem with installing Ubuntu on older PCs was that they tended to have less Ram. On one system, with 128k ram, I could only install with the text mode installer, and then it was fairly crippled when it ran in GUI mode. Upgrading to 1Gb ram (not very expensive nowadays) and it worked fine. It wan't the processing power it needed, it was the memory.

unbuntu should be fine it requires much less power than its microsoft counterparts, I was under the impression it was ideal for older computers.
