Many of the updates are to fix security vulnerabilities. So I would say it makes a big difference.

Thank you Budapest, I understand what you are saying, but what I meant was, if one is not doing updates, then the fact that support has ended for it does not really effect anything, does it?

I think eventually you will find that newer software will no longer run correctly on SP2.

I think, as well, we are going to see less and less software that will run correctly on XP, no matter what the service pack level. It is becoming too difficult and too expensive to ensure that software will run on three operating systems, and five service packs.

It downloaded from auto updates in 2009. Several times I was going to install SP3.
Started reading the prep advice on BC. Things like if it gets stuck in reboot do this or uninstall this or that if it doesn’t install correctly. Scary stuff. I am not a computer guy. I just want this thing to work. Biggest kick was MS stating that even if installed with no problem you may not see much of a difference.
With SP2 this computer does everything I need it to do for my small business. Even if there is only a 5% chance of a problem why bother?
I am concerned about the ending of support but I told myself after my last computer that I would replace the machine every 3 years. On the 4th year now so it’s getting time to do something. Debating with myself over Win 7 or an Apple machine.

I think for the most part is cause the average user does not routinely check for updates, or they simply ignore them. I have seen many computers still running SP1 and SP2, and there is no "update" shield in the task bar. When I perform the update check, most times there is several updates, just to get the update process to check the computer for needed/available updates.

I have seen so many computers where anti-virus software is outdated, expired, or even non-functioning, and users don't even pay attention to that, let alone worrying about windows updates. It is probably just some laziness mixed in with ignorance.

I have not upgraded to SP3 for a few reasons. I only have 640 meg of ram and have been told it may slow my system down because of that.
You were misinformed. Well, not misinformed--you were told something that's patently false.

And the full download for SP3 is only 300 or so meg, not 700.

One of the main reasons why some people don't upgrade their Window XP to SP3 is because their copy of Windows aren't genuine. The SP3 once downloaded onto a non-genuine copy will not update, will not provide help, and the desktop background is a black screen saying that the copy isn't genuine.

That may be the reason some do not install SP/3 but I don’t think it applies to most users.
XP with SP2 has been a lot more stable then other versions of Windows. So much so that I bet a lot of non-technical computer users started to think of their computer like a TV or radio. They just do not care what the operating system is only that it works. SP 3 doesn’t solve an obvious shortcoming. It is just good housekeeping.
Kind of like getting a new improved vacuum cleaner except that the new vacuum will not work any better then your old one. And it also comes with a warning that it may not run right or only has a 5% chance of catching fire and burning your house down but you really should use it anyway because it is the latest version.

Also not wholly true. Im not one for pirating, but I have seen pirated copies of windows, and many, will take SP3, and update perfectly fine. It all depends on the skills of the person who made the hack of XP. Im not for promoting such things, but unfortunatly, they do exist.

It was (and still is as far as I know) official Microsoft policy to allow non-genuine copies of Windows XP to receive critical updates.

Not with SP3 as it used to be in SP1 and SP2, Mate.

That was what I was crapping off about before?

Once SP3 is installed the Tech has a real Problem that is quite STUPID. Trust me, I really know that part of SP3, completely STUPID of M$oft, given what they always did for Techs.

Maybe those Gurus that know it all can try this?

Just Use a Machine to install a Fresh copy of Win XP, under SP2? Refuse to allow SP3 to install on it. Let it do it's thing and Upload the Updates. You will get them all, even if it is a Pirated Copy.

Then do the same on another Machine , but allow SP3 to install? Just watch the difference.

Easiest way to Learn?

Ray.

Regardless of genuine status, users will not be denied access to critical security updates. Users who have not validated their computers as genuine, however, will not be able to install many updates, including Windows Defender. Microsoft strongly recommends that users of non-genuine systems correct their problem immediately.
