Sound I cannot hear any sound

I have a Compaq laptop, when i first boot it i cannot hear any sound when my music or video plays and even the icon doesnot appear on the notification area. when I restart it for the second or third time then only i hear the sound and see the icon. please help me.

What kind of lap top do you have?

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.
