Intro, and researching a WIn XP challenge

New member today ... out of necessity!

I am a high school computer science, networking and robotics teacher. Supposed to know a thing or two about computers. My wife's laptop (Win XP SP3) is behaving oddly, so naturally it becomes my problem. She's threatening to buy an Apple!

I'll search the forums a bit before I post my problem. Might find the answer. The web browser(s) (IE8, Firefox 3.6.3) don't go where they are supposed to, get redirected.
